Lavalley building feedback wanted

The Select Board needs your help moving Cornwall toward a decision on what to do with the Lavalley building next to Cornwall Town Hall. Your feedback will shape the article on which you will be asked to vote at Town Meeting on March 5, 2012.

What do you think the Town of Cornwall should do with the Lavalley building?

(Note: Given the failure of prior efforts to raise private or other funding, estimated costs below are assumed to be taxpayer dollars.)

  1. It’s time to put the Lavalley building to rest.  Dismantle the structure, sell salvageable components and recycle the remainder.  ESTIMATED COST: $15,000 – $25,000
  2. The Lavalley building is worth saving but not with taxpayer money.  Sell/auction the building for whatever amount we can get with the condition that it be removed from the property within six months. ESTIMATED COST: $5,000 – $10,000
  3. The Lavalley building is part of Cornwall’s history and the salvageable portion(s) should be moved to other Town-owned property. ESTIMATED COST: $16,000 – $20,000
  4. The Lavalley building is a significant part of Cornwall’s cultural history and town center.  It should be restored to useful service. ESTIMATED COST: $450,000 – $500,000
Please email your response (with further comment if desired) to Sue by December 31 so we can study your responses prior to preparing the warning (in January) for town meeting, which will be held on March 5, 2012.
